*shakes head* stupid kids…
by Travis on Jun.27, 2008, under Rants, Tech Stuff
FYI – some of the current acronyms kids use these days. Some are definitely new to me and some I actually find very disturbing. Figured this merited it’s own post seeing as how we were on the subject of Acronyms earlier. 🙂
Some commonly used Acronyms by kids on the net today:
ASL – Age/Sex/Location – been around since the dawn of the internet. LOL
MorF – Male or Female – you just added a letter to your typing when it is resolved with ASL easily.
SorG – Straight or Gay – Give me a break
MOOS – Member of Opposite Sex – what would you need to use that one for?!
LMIRL – Let’s Meet In Real Life – so you’re not in real life already?
ADR – Address – I remember when we used ADDR… kids are so lazy these days, lol
WYCM – Will You Call Me – Ok, that’s a new one on me.
KFU – Kisses For You – And another
NALOPKT – Not A Lot Of People Know This – what are you lazy!? Just type that out!
POS – Parents Over Shoulder (I remember something different, I *must* be getting old)
PIRÂ – Parents In Room
P911 – Parent Alert
PAW – Parents Are Watching
PAL – Parents Are Listening
KPC – Keeping Parents Clueless
TD2M – Talk Dirty To Me
IWSN – I Want Sex Now
NIFOC – Nude In Front of Computer
GYPO – Get Your Pants Off
For the record, I catch one of my kids using any of these P Acronyms or other devious ones like the ones listed above, I’ll disable their internet privleges permanently. There is NO REASON they should be having conversations which require the use of one of those.Â

NC replacing license plates for “offensive” acronym?!
by Travis on Jun.27, 2008, under Rants, Tech Stuff
You have got to be kidding me! This is a prime example of how incredibly melodramatic people have become this day in age. It’s a freakin license plate people. It’s made up of letters and numbers put together in a sequence to create a unique identifier for vehicles. It’s not intended or should be construed as anything more.
RALEIGH, NCÂ — Thanks to some text message-savvy grandchildren, North Carolina drivers whose license plates have the potentially offensive “WTF” letter combination can replace the tags for free.
Internet Acronyms Parents Should Know
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Tuesday the state Division of Motor Vehicles has notified nearly 10,000 holders of license plates with the letter combination.
Officials learned last year the common acronym stands for a vulgar phrase in e-mail and cell phone text messages.
The DMV recently realized the same letters appeared on the sample license plate on its own Web site. Officials are trying to remove the plate from the site.
DMV officials got word of the plates last July when a 60-year-old technology teacher from Fayetteville complained about the plate after her teenage grandchildren clued her in.
DMV officials said they try to keep up with the latest acronyms, and that anyone who has an issue with their plate can contact their local DMV office to request a new one.
*rolls eyes* What next? I mean c`mon folks, relax a little. Are you so uptight you have to look for things that are offensive so you have something to complain about?
preparing to launch…

So I shunned technology for a few days… I needed it. Tech-Post warning – skip it if your brain hurts from reading these.
Well, we’re definitely into the week of pushing out the hardware/software combinations to our remaining sites and the first full week or two results are amazing in Denver and Tulsa. We cannot wait to roll out the rest of our CommVault installations.
It was incredible to come in this morning though and see that the Exagrid was working great. Unit 1 which has been holding all of our SQL and server backups is rocking and rollin. With a de-dupe ratio of 5.81:1 it’s holding ~4.4TB of backup data in 760GB of space. That’s two weeks of data crammed in there… CRAZY! As for our  Unit 2 that backs up our NAS which has the highest rate of changed files I think, it’s holding at a de-dupe ratio of 3.17:1 holding ~8.03TB of backup data in ~2.5TB of space. While that’s only a week of data there, that’s two fulls and several incrementals. It may actually get better since at the moment it’s in the process of doing some deduplication. Scary! I’m just amazed at what this technology is doing. It’s even better in practice than it looks on paper. LOL
Another lesson learned from this last couple of weeks in addition to not using single instancing with Exagrid… DO NOT USE SYNTHETIC FULLS. 🙂 It’s quite honestly best to do a weekly full and daily incrementals if you have too much data to do daily fulls.
With our backup jobs being a bit more stable now that I’ve got a good grip on using CommVault Galaxy, we’re seeing some much needed improvement on the backup speeds. We’re able to secure much more data in a much more shorter window than before which is absolutely amazing. I’m not making exact calculations yet but I’d say we’ve reduced it below 30 hours.  Less tapes, less hard drive space… I’m loving it.
A slightly new look …
by Travis on Jun.14, 2008, under Tech Stuff
Ok, so there is nothing slight about the change in theme on my blog site. I got tired of the old one, ok? 🙂
I was fumbling around the net late last night and decided to take a good look at some themes that were out there. I found a really cool one called Fractal Red but I don’t like red… so I made it blue. 🙂
Working out some bugs and stuff so if you see something obviously out of place, feel free to comment and let me know so I can find/fix it. The more WordPress keeps adding features the more stuff I have to modify when I do stuff to themes. LOL
Anyway… enough of this being on the computer on a beautiful Saturday. 🙂
